David's Story

David Sly | Canada

I was a competitive swimmer, got bored and took up squash as it was something to do while waiting for my parents to pick me up. That was when I was 14, and 40 years later i’m still playing.

I’m competitive by nature when sports are involved and definitely prefer the responsibility and control of individual sports.

I had shoulder surgery several years ago and was told that was the end of me winning tournaments. The surgeon actually said that. I worked hard on recovery and my first Canadian nationals lost surgery I beat a legend (Willie Hosey) to win a national masters title. The pandemic was very difficult as I did not play for over a year. Upon coming back, I sucked.

I hadn’t had any coaching of any sort in 38 years and via SquashSkills became interested in their camps. I have been to two and have learned valuable ideas at both. This season, the season of two squash camps, the ideas learned are not fully implemented but have been instrumental in my improvement and winning the US nationals and Canadian Nationals.

I think my recent victory over Jamie Crombie in the finals at US Nationals was a highlight. Following it up a few weeks later winning Canadian Nationals and a 25-1 tournament match record overall this season are certainly highlights.

Squash is full of camaraderie at all levels of the game. Squash is expressive in many ways and perhaps for me, the best part is I own all responsibility for my results.

If you win, it’s your fault. If you lose it’s your fault. I like that.
