Izaak's Story

Izaak Lea | Netherlands

My name is Izaak and I have been playing squash for 15 years. Starting out only playing once a week with some friends at my local club soon became quite the obsession. After attending University I really wanted to improve so then I started to have a few lessons to make sure I had some grounding in technique. Increasing training sessions above 1 per week was a real game changer, it allowed me to rise through the rankings and make some good improvements. I became so obsessed with squash that I also wanted to pass my enthusiasm onto others and that is when I became a squash coach.

I found SquashSkills to be an important tool in my coaching and playing journey. It has allowed me to structure and focus my solo practise and also highlight some gaps in my technical knowledge. SquashSkills has helped my coaching journey by allowing me to get key coaching points from hearing different coaches explain the same concept but in different way. This has helped teach students of different abilities and learning styles. I would then be able to help my students from the extra knowledge I had gained from the SquashSkills platform. The extra technical knowledge has also helped raise my own level as well.

I always struggled high on the backhand side. I have found Jesse Engelbrecht to be a superb coach. The way he explains the techniques and concepts is truly a work of art. From his pointers, he has helped me turn this weakness into an area of strength.

SquashSkills has helped facilitate my improvements. Through watching their videos, I have recently been chosen to play in the Throne of the North competition where a selection of the 32 best players in the North of the country are chosen for a tournament to find out who is the king in the North. I went from not being chosen, working with my Squash skills membership and improving, to then being chosen for this tournament.

Squash had been a great way to hang out with friends. I have met lots of new people and helped me reconnect with old friends just form jumping on court with them and having a nice hit.

Great fitness, great fun, what more can you ask for.
